Burrtec USA is prepping for a big month when its U.S.-based sales and marketing teams – and corporate teams from Japan – will be manning the company’s trade show booth at PestWorld 2024 in Denver!

PestWorld is the annual trade show and conference for professionals working in the pest control industry. It is hosted by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), a non-profit organization designed to help protect public health, food, and property from pests.

Companies of all types – manufacturing, tools, apparel, and more – will be at PestWorld 2024, which takes place Oct. 22-25 at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center in Denver.

Burrtec will be launching its new Ratshut, a rodent-proof weather strip designed to prevent rodents from entering through openings at the top and sides of garage doors. It comes with a slick white design with a stainless-steel plate inside the plastic exterior. It is durable yet flexible plastic and installs quickly.

The National Urban Rat Summit was held last week in New York and several conclusions resulted from the meeting.

New York’s “Rat Czar” Kathleen Corradi, NYC’s Director of Rodent Mitigation, wants to bring experts together to combat the rat problem in America’s largest city.

Mayor Eric Adams described the issue as a “war on rats” that he has witnessed firsthand and has championed moving the city from trash bags to plastic garbage cans.

Two separate university researchers from Canada gave presentations about issues that are caused by rats and mice – disease, mental health issues, health issues relating to dust and dirt brought in by rodents.

But in the end the one issue that remained at the forefront of prevention – stopping rats and mice from entering under doorways. Because mice and rats can squeeze into openings the size of a quarter or sometimes less, prevention is critical.

To prevent infestations, door sweeps are necessary tools, and they stop dust, dirt, and pollen. Mice and rats can squeeze into a home, restaurant, commercial facility through the smallest hole under or on the side of a doorway.

When you think about rodents you typically don’t think about season. Mice are certainly present in spring, summer, and fall – and in winter they spend considerable time indoors, as well. But in pest control the “rodent season” refers to the time when mice and rats are trying to find indoor shelter, i.e. most of winter.

During winter, mice will find entry points into a home or business to gain shelter, typically in wall voids, attics, or crawl spaces. Rats will find their spots too, sometimes in attics, chimneys, walls, and other locations.

Each mouse can have up to 60 babies per year and rats up to 24, according to Victor Pest Control. This means an infestation can be a problem that cannot be resolved. Even if they don’t gain entry into a home, rodents will forage and create a stockpile of food near their shelter under wood, in a shed, etc.
