Dr. Bobby Corrigan Focuses on Common Entry Points Part 2 of 3

10/01/2025 By Ed DeMask

For obvious reasons, we talked to Dr. Bobby Corrigan about the issues that doors present when not properly protected from rodent access. He had some great insight about rodents and doors in both commercial and residential settings.

“Doors of all of all types are famous for letting in rodents,” says Dr. Corrigan. “You have typical front doors of homes, or you have the main door of a restaurant or anything like that. Often times, we don’t seal them correctly at the bottom, we leave that seal or gap because we don’t appreciate it when you’re standing up and you’re like 5’8” looking down a small gap of 6 mm you almost don’t see it. So, it’s the unseen open door of a closed door. It’s an open door for rodents.

“Doors of course come in different shapes and sizes we’ll have double doors in commercial accounts and in office buildings and hotels and even if we correctly seal them, we don’t often seal between the doors, that thing called the astragal gap. We get an ‘F’ in terms of school grades on how well we keep our doors sealed. And because of that rodents come in sometimes just at will. I don’t have any data to prove it, but it may be the number one type of gap for them.”

Tips for PMPS?

Dr. Corrigan has a few tips he always shares with PMPs that focus on rodent control services.

“For the PMPs they have to if they’re a reputable company proceed down the path of Integrated Pest Management (IPM),” he says. “And the reason IPM is the kindergarten level of pest control is because it combines all the good things. First you inspect to see, can you build them out? So, you’re doing inspections so that you can see are all the doors correctly sealed, do they have something as a pest excluder device. Check the all the doors, check the holes, check the penetrations. I always advise them if they’re not sealed you should offer to seal them. Do it for them, it’s a great service. So that’s the first thing, keeping them out.

“And then, after that – and this is the hard lesson, you try to advise customers, please don’t attract them with dog food and food and garbage. So, the second (tip) is trying to get the customer to be a partner and not attracting rodents.”

Two more tips are truly important, as well, Dr. Corrigan added.

“Third is what non-chemical tools are they going to use to control. Are they going to use snap traps for example for house mice or use multiple catch traps. Glue traps? What’s their non-chemical approach.

“The last one, which should be last and not first, are you going to use some poisonous bait of some sort to kill them because that’s the least desirable and least effective for the long term. The most effective is keeping them out of the building in the first place. Like I said I’m a fanatic about that. Why charge them every month and put more poison out every month to kill them when you can try to keep them out from the very first week. That’s the way it should be.”

Dr. Bobby Corrigan Focuses on Common Entry Points Part 1 of 3

09/24/2025 By Ed DeMask

One of the top rodent experts in the pest industry is Dr. Bobby Corrigan. Just as many athletes who are “Hall of Famers,” so is Corrigan who is a member of the Pest Management Hall of Fame.

He has published hundreds of articles and has been consulting for decades. Dr. Corrigan’s three common entry points for rats and mice:

  • Penetrations
  • Gaps
  • Holes

“Any penetration like a line that enters a home – a utility line, a plumbing line, a cable line, anything that goes through a wall, and you do not seal properly the rodents will follow that line where the penetration comes out.

“For gaps or holes, if it’s more than a 6 mm gap it allows a mouse in, if it’s more than a 12 mm gap, it allows a rat in. As you drive down the street you look at people’s garage doors and if you see light leaking from the garage door, that gap – a little gap makes it easy for them to enter.”

The Next Government Shutdown Might be Rodents!

09/17/2025 By Ed DeMask

The General Services Administration (GSA) in Texas has been overrun with a rodent issue. The Fritz G. Lanham Federal Building in Fort Worth is being affected by rodents because of an increase in tenants, according to Newsweek.

Disease is the top issue. According to the Centers for Disease, Control and Prevention,Hantaviruses are a family of viruses which can cause serious illnesses and death. These viruses cause diseases like hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).

They are spread mainly by rodents and are not spread from person-to-person. One of the best ways to prevent them is to keep them from entering under doorways.

Airport Doors Allow Rodents to “Travel” Inside

09/10/2025 By Ed DeMask

An aspect of airport design that seems to be ideal for rodents is the number of doors allowing access to the terminal. Each terminal at every airport has multiple doors allowing travelers arriving and departing to enter or exit.

These don’t include the doors that the hundreds or thousands of daily workers use to enter employee-only areas. Every single door is an opportunity for mice or rats to enter the airport.

One example is Albany International Airport, which according to the Times Union states that an airport spokesman admits to a “mice problem” The bigger problem for any facility is when rodents enter, they have the chance to spread disease and to populate with an infestation.

To prevent rodents from entering under doorways, pest professionals use Burrtec products.

New Recycling Methods to Prevent Rodent Access

09/03/2025 By Ed DeMask

Unlike a typical trash or recycling bin that is used in municipal locations, the City of Cambridge, Massachusetts has announced that starting this month they are using new fully enclosed bins to prevent rodents.

Most municipalities utilize normal trash bins or cans that have an open top so residents can easily dispose of items. But those same cans allow mice and rats to climb up and enter the trash receptacle, possibly spreading disease and in other instances, perhaps causing infestations to start.

In addition, the bins are solar powered and bring a number of non-rodent benefits. Because they compact, they can hold more waste; the design makes them easier to empty; and software alerts let the city know when it’s time to empty them.

Rodents cause a lot of trouble up to the tune of $19 billion per year in damage in the U.S. alone. They can cause significant issues to warehouses and facilities, including those dealing with food processing and storage, which can lead to contamination of products. Rodent droppings and urine can also spread disease, so rodent control is truly a high priority.

In addition to innovative trash bins, the use of stainless steel-powered weatherstrip and door sweep products from Burrtec USA is another accepted practice for preventing rodents. These prevent mice and rats – as well as dust and dirt – from entering into a garage. The company also has a product for typical residential and commercial doors.
