Be Ready to Protect Your Commercial Facility from Rodent Entry!

08/22/2025 By Ed DeMask

Protecting a facility from rodents is a full-time ongoing job, so having a good plan in place to be able to implement prevention strategies.

Ensure that every door has a protective door sweep preventing any size rodent from entering. Rodents are dangerous and can be costly if they’re not attended to immediately.

They cause $19 billion per year in damage in the U.S. alone. They can cause significant issues to warehouses and facilities, including those dealing with food processing and storage, which can lead to contamination of products. Rodent droppings and urine can also spread disease, so rodent control is truly a high priority.

Getting a certified Pest Management Professional as part of your team is vital. The technician will work with your facility manager on a plan to protect the entire building from rodent issues.

From rodent stations that lure in rats and mice and either feed them bait or trap them, these can be used near entrances to a facility and there are rooftop versions. In addition, these can be strapped to beams to catch roof rats that climb. There are also electronic versions that can give real-time notifications via smart phone apps.

Just as dust and pollen needs to be kept out, so do rodents through door sweep protectors. One of the largest issues is that rodents can eat through almost anything – wood, aluminum, and even concrete. But not steel – so ensure you get door sweep products for the bottom of all exterior doors as well as the roll-up door sweeps made specifically from stainless steel.

Use stainless steel-powered weatherstrip and door sweep products from Burrtec USA. These prevent mice and rats – as well as dust and dirt – from entering into a garage. The company also has a product for typical residential and commercial doors.

Ratshut by Burrtec is a stainless-steel spine-backed product and an essential tool for maintenance and facility managers, pest control professionals, and garage door installers. All of Burrtec’s door sweeps including Ratshut can protect from rodent infestations, as well as stop dust, dirt, and pollen.

As the leading manufacturer of door sweep solutions, Burrtec is providing quality exclusion products to PMPs and building material suppliers. It is the North American division of Burrtec Co., Ltd., one of Japan’s largest pest control producers. To learn more about Burrtec, visit our U.S. website.

Summer Alert: Rodent Activity is On the Rise!

08/15/2025 By Ed DeMask

Each year the rodent activity in cities and suburbs follows various patterns tied to the needs of rats and mice – i.e. their search for food, shelter, and water and also what temperature it is at the time of year.

Summertime in August is pretty much the height of all rodent activity as food is more plentiful than any other time with outdoor eating like picnics or festivals, and the resulting trash that isn’t there in winter.

So, it’s a time when everyone, including homes and businesses, need to be doing their best ensure all openings are closed up so rats and mice are not able to find entry points. Some of the biggest entry points include:

  • Pipes – as they move and giggle over time, openings are created around them and rodents can squeeze through. Filling with caulk or steel wool prevents them from entering.
  • Roofs – ensure that all openings at the roof level are sealed and protected.
  • Ground level – occasionally any types of openings may occur between shingles or bricks or from remodeling over time. These need to be filled for protection.
  • Doorways – under doorways is one of the top entries for rats and mice, and most door sweep products cannot provide any protection as they are typically made from materials rats can chew through – wood, thin plastic, aluminum, and more. Rodents can even chew through poorly poured concrete. Only use stainless steel!
  • Garage doors – garages come with seals at the bottom to protect from rodents, dust, dirt and pollen … but over time that seal wears or becomes damaged offering entry to rodents. Plus, the sides have no permanent seals so replacing the sides and top minimum with a garage door weatherstrip is critical – only if made of stainless steel.

The best way to start protecting against rodents is to use stainless steel-powered weatherstrip and door sweep products from Burrtec USA. These prevent mice and rats – as well as dust and dirt – from entering into a garage. The company also has a product for typical residential and commercial doors.

Rodent Complaints: 10,000 Per Year, Per Major City!

08/08/2025 By Ed DeMask

Rat and mouse problems are so bad that the typical large city receives more than 10,000 complaints annually and performs thousands of inspections.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, rats and mice have very different behavioral patterns:

  • Rats: Each evening, as they explore their territories, rats and mice learn the locations of new objects, food sources and escape routes. A rat’s territory or “home range” is generally within a 50-foot to 150-foot radius of the nest, while a mouse usually lives within a 10-foot to 30-foot radius of the nest.
  • Mice: Other differences exist between rats and mice. Norway rats require about an ounce of water each day – one reason why they are often found in sewers and along rivers and streams. House mice, however, can survive on the water they absorb from foods. Norway rats prefer to live in underground burrows, but will live above ground in walls, ceilings and storage areas. Outdoors, mice will nest in burrows but will move into structures to nest in attics, wall voids, cabinets, appliances and furniture.

Both are getting inside residential and commercial structures causing damage and bringing disease.

One way to prevent their entry is using Burrtec’s new Ratshut weatherstrip that prevents mice and rats – as well as dust and dirt – from entering into a garage. The company also has a product for typical residential and commercial doors.

Rodent-Spread Disease Can Be Fatal

07/23/2025 By Ed DeMask

Disease is spread regularly by rodents, both rats and mice, through urine, saliva, and feces.

The Hantavirus is a deadly disease that can affect the kidneys as well as can be fatal. Rodents were discovered on the property of late actor Gene Hackman and his wife, who died of Hantavirus.

To protect from rodents – and from the diseases they spread – proactive control methods need to be followed.

Just like the inspections that technicians make on the exterior of a home in an effort to prevent ants, spiders and other bugs from entering a home, a preventative approach will help stop mice and rats.

Door sweeps are the top way to stop them from entering a home or business and Burrtec is the manufacturer of the industry’s top tool – Ratshut. It is a stainless-steel spine and is an essential tool for maintenance and facility managers, pest control professionals, and garage door installers, was heavily discussed. The product comes in a version for garages and another for standard doors.

The company has also manufactured strong door sweeps prior to the launch of Ratshut, specifically the Burrat Samurai Armor door sweep with a replaceable stainless-steel frame.

These products not only are preventing rodent infestations, but also dust, dirt, and pollen.
