San Diego Vector Program Provides Free Rodent Inspections to County Residents

02/26/2025 By Ed DeMask

San Diego’s Vector Control Program is at the forefront of community rodent control efforts as the city is offering free inspections to county residents that think they may be experiencing a rodent infestation.

Because rats and common rodents like house mice can spread disease so easily, the county officials offer free educational inspections that cover the exteriors of buildings in San Diego County. In addition, residents that participate receive a free rat control kit that includes the following:

  • Tamper-resistant Trapping Station and key
  • Rat Control Brochure
  • 1 Rat Snap Trap
  • 1/4″ Sample Hardware Cloth (used for exclusion)

Resident interested in participating can contact San Diego County here.

Another option for assisting in exclusion and prevention of rats and mice is utilizing the strongest door sweep products made by Burrtec USA.

Burrtec’s new Ratshut product is designed to protect garage doors and has a stainless-steel spine, while the company also has a version of Ratshut designed for regular doors.

Maintenance and facility managers, pest control professionals, and garage door installers all use them as daily tools for prevention. In addition, Burrtec’s door sweeps can protect from rodent infestations, as well as stop dust, dirt, and pollen.

Burrtec USA is a leading manufacturer of door sweep solutions, providing quality exclusion products to PMPs and building material suppliers. It is the North American division of Burrtec Co., Ltd., one of Japan’s largest pest control producers. To learn more about Burrtec, visit our U.S. website.

Using Cameras Shows Why Door Sweeps are Needed!

02/19/2025 By Ed DeMask

The use of cameras in the pest control industry has grown tremendously the last few years, with PMPs (pest management professionals) relying on these tools to reach difficult places like attics or behind machinery or rooftops.

Also, the cameras are showing behavior patterns. For example, one researcher currently using them to seek out information about how rats and mice are infesting public housing in New York is Rutgers’ Changlu Wang, professor of entomology.

By placing cameras in these hard to spot areas, professionals and researchers can learn how rats and mice act around bait stations, if they eat certain baits or not, which patterns they literally take when they spot a station and walk around it if avoiding, and more.

Another way to utilize these cameras, which these days are wireless and offer instant access to videos and images via cloud services, is by positioning them near doorways to watch rodent activity.

It only takes a small opening the size of a quarter for rats and mice to squeeze in and start infesting a home or business. Many commercial doors are damaged with bricks or rocks that are used to prop doors open, thereby leaving that quarter-sized opening to welcome rodents.

The only way to protect against this is with Burrtec USA’s door sweeps – which are the only premium product that rats and mice cannot chew through because of stainless steel. That’s why Burrtec’s new Ratshut product is designed to protect garage doors and has a stainless-steel spine, while the company also has a version of Ratshut designed for regular doors.

These are essential tools for maintenance and facility managers, pest control professionals, and garage door installers. In addition, Burrtec’s door sweeps can protect from rodent infestations, as well as stop dust, dirt, and pollen.

Wildlife Industry Seeks Better Rodent Protection!

02/12/2025 By Ed DeMask

In Salt Lake City, residents have been utilizing traditional methods to control mice and rats but the city’s chief biologist is contending that rodenticides are not only an issue to rodents but the ecosystem itself.

According to the city’s hoodline publication, predators such as owls and hawks are consuming the rodenticides and are having fatal effects. Like most pest control situations where IPM (integrated pest management) is the focus, utilized fewer chemicals is always the best option.

That’s exactly why many pest professionals have realized that preventing mice and rats through exclusion is better than trying to eliminate them in the first place. The cornerstone of all prevention approaches is using door sweep products by Burrtec USA.

While it may not be visible to a consumer’s eye, an opening the size of a quarter can allow a mice or rat under a door and into a home or business. Doorways need to be protected by door sweeps and the only premium product that rats and mice cannot chew through, is stainless steel. That’s why Burrtec’s new Ratshut product is designed to protect garage doors and has a stainless-steel spine, while the company also has a version of Ratshut designed for regular doors.

Chicago Steps Up the War Against Rodents

02/05/2025 By Ed DeMask

Chicago is stepping up its fight against rodents, especially after securing the title of “Rattiest City in America” as named by Orkin for the number of rat treatments in 2024.

The third biggest city in the country has been number one for its rat presence for 10 straight years! It’s routinely common to walk by a Chicago alley and see large rats scattering across from one dumpster to another.

As a result, Chicago is surveying alleys, streets, anywhere one can find good sources of food, shelter, and housing for rats. Then, rat bait is being distributed to try to start to control the population.

While that will help – hopefully – reduce the population of rats, there is much more protection that is needed! One of the main ways that rats and mice enter homes, especially in Chicago, is through cracks around pipe and openings, and under doorways.

Ways to Spot a Mouse During Winter

01/20/2025 By Ed DeMask

As mice do everything possible to find a warm shelter when the temperatures keep dropping, there are signs that can help you know if you’re getting some unwanted guests.

By paying attention to your home or facility in these easy ways, you can help keep mice (as well as rats) from entering and disturbing you.

Openings – check your openings to see if there are small spaces where mice can squeeze through. It only takes a small hole next to a pipe or between siding to give them a way in.

Doors – inspect your doors for the same things, openings! Small cracks or breaks in the bottom of a door will allow a rodent to sneak right in and start the infestation.

Cleaning – is your home or facility clean? If not, you probably are attracting (and hosting) mice!

Gnaw Marks – look for bite marks on different surfaces, from plastic to wiring to insulation and more. They have a great power to gnaw through everything but stainless steel (even poorly cured concrete).

To be proactive, use Burrtec USA’s premium door sweep products. Burrtec’s new Ratshut product is designed to protect garage doors and has a stainless-steel spine, while the company also has a version of Ratshut designed for regular doors.

These are essential tools for maintenance and facility managers, pest control professionals, and garage door installers. In addition, Burrtec’s door sweeps can protect from rodent infestations, as well as stop dust, dirt, and pollen.
