Electronic Rodent Monitoring and Exclusion

07/24/2024 By Ed DeMask

Electronic Rodent Monitoring (ERM) systems have become an integrated part of the pest control industry, offering new features and tools that provide tremendous benefits to both PMPs and end users.

The key to avoiding a rat or mouse infestation is prevention. All facility managers and quality assurance (QA) professionals look underneath, around, behind and on top of everything in their facility to ensure there are no rats, and no openings for rats to enter. And PMPs serving these facilities do this by inspecting under all machinery and in the smallest, tightest areas in a facility.

Because rodent stations essentially become electronic devices with 24/7 monitoring, a technician doesn’t need to tour the entire facility to find out where problem issues exist. In addition, by knowing the problem areas already the PMP is spending less on labor and call backs.

Many professionals in the industry were complaining that rodent stations were not clean or sanitary. Adding the electronic element made it a product that was viewed by PMPs more often and also offering a greater level of protection.

Burrtec manufactures door sweeps that can prevent mice and rats from entering a home, office, or warehouse facility. Its new garage door product is being released later this year, to protect the sides of garage doors from rodent entry.

Burrtec USA is a leading manufacturer of door sweep solutions, providing quality exclusion products to PMPs and building material suppliers. It is the North American division of Burrtec Co., Ltd., one of Japan’s largest pest control producers. To learn more about Burrtec, visit our U.S. website.

Garage Door Entry Points for Rodents and How to Limit Them

07/10/2024 By Ed DeMask

One thing to consider when protecting your home from rodents – mice in particular in residential situations – is the fact that many people overlook preventing them from entering through the garage.

It’s common knowledge that mice are incredible “chewers.” They are great at gnawing at everything from insulation to wiring to light metals like aluminum, and much more. Garage doors usually made of wood, glass, fiberglass, aluminum, or a combination. Mice can chew through wood, plastic, vinyl, plastic, and aluminum or fiberglass.

So, protection needs to be good if not great to prevent mice infestations. Entry points are the most immediate concern – being able to stop them from getting in is the best form of control.

Garage entry points can be like normal doors, with holes at the bottom allowing mice or rats underneath and through the size of a dime or quarter. But garage doors because of their weight pushing down, have an added form of protection as the door is typically forced heavily against the ground.

The sides of garage doors, however, are not protected. Through time, the bolts holding these doors together lose their tightness just as part of normal wear and tear. Burrtec’s new garage door exclusion product protects garage doors from allowing rodents to enter, thus preventing infestations.

Burrtec protects both garage doors and entry doors from rodents. Burrtec manufactures door sweeps that can prevent mice and rats from entering a home, office, or warehouse facility. Why are Mice Still Present During Summer?

07/10/2024 By Ed DeMask

During the winter, there are simple reasons why rats and mice find themselves seeking a presence in a home or building. Their top three needs all would likely be found by going indoors – food, shelter, water. But are the same reasons true in summer?

Since those sources or “big three” are readily available indoors and out during the summer months, a rodent presence indoors during summer indicates a lack of protection around entry points to the home.

Very typical are the openings around plumbing and other utility pipes that are commonly created as they jiggle over time. These openings only need to be the size of a quarter or sometimes, less. When homeowners have a satellite cable dish installed and removed, at times that will leave a small opening in the siding.

The bigger entry points that homeowners and building owners and occupants really need to focus on are garage doors and entry doors. While garage doors have a padding support on the bottom, there is no protection on the sides where wear and tear is just as present.

For entry doors, they most times have openings under them and require door sweeps to protect from rodents squeezing underneath and infesting the building or home. Many door sweeps are not as strong as others and that’s important because rats have strong incisors and can bite through aluminum, wood, and even poorly cured concrete!

Marksman Pest Control’s Ryan Roy Relies on Burrtec USA for Door Sweeps

06/24/2024 By Ed DeMask

Exclusion is a simple tactic that when done correctly, can actually prevent rodent infestations before they start. That’s why Ryan Roy of Connecticut’s Marksman LLC relies heavily on Burrtec USA’s line of door sweeps to prevent mice and rats from entering under doorways.

Rodent problems have not lessened much during COVID-19 and in most areas, PMPs are still getting one of every six calls for a rodent issue. But while reacting to mice and rat problems is part of the job, preventing them is the other part. Ryan Roy uses Burrtec USA’s door sweep products for one reason – they work.

“Finding a proper solution for exclusion needs is important to every pest control professional,” said Roy. “What’s important is being able to install a door sweep easily, know that the product is dependable and strong, and have peace of mind that it will provide premium performance against rodents trying to eat through it.”

Because Burrtec’s door sweep products are made with stainless steel – not plastic or aluminum like other manufacturers – it can prevent rodents from biting through it to enter a home or business. That’s why PMPs around the country use it as a daily exclusion tool.

Since rodents can chew through just about anything – including plastic and lead pipes – door sweeps from Burrtec are vital! Burrtec manufactures door sweeps that can prevent mice and rats from entering a home, office, or warehouse facility.

Protect by Making Sure Door Sweeps are Tight to the Ground: Buildings Magazine

06/10/2024 By Ed DeMask

Some articles are timeless and there’s a great one from Buildings Magazine that hit the nail on the head when detailing how to protect a building from pests in spring and summer.

Some of the aspects of the advice include the following:

Keep landscape trimmed – by having branches and bushes away from the building then it doesn’t allow pests or rodents to enter onto the home directly.
Work with pest pros – don’t try to do it all yourself, let licensed pest professionals hand the job.
Sanitize food and trash areas – this is important because rodents come seeking food and water sources.

But the #1 advice was to monitor points of entry! Keeping a building, just like a home, rodent-free starts with prevention. And mice and rats seek openings in buildings to enter and create full infestations.

Doorways provide openings underneath when not protected by quality door sweep products, like those made by industry leader Burrtec USA.
