Just as humans enjoy warm weather and attractive locations, so do rodents! A new study shows that rats and mice are infesting cities at high rates and the cause: warm weather opens up opportunity for breeding, which leads to infestations.

 

The study in Science Advances, reported by AP, shows that major cities have become tremendous breeding grounds for rats and mice as they are attractive from a food and water standpoint, but also for finding shelter. However, the top reason: the fact that temperatures are higher than previous years has opened the door – pun intended – for infestations.

 

By having food, water and shelter, rats and mice have everything necessary to breed and increase their numbers in major cities. The study shows that the rodents cause $27 billion in damage annually due to disease, food waste, ruined food supplies, and more.

The best pest control professionals deal with this issue on a daily basis, from residential homes allowing in mice to large commercial facilities where the door is left “kicked open” with a cinder block propped against it during warmer temperatures. Or worse, a brick is kicked under the door to keep it open – and in the process the bottom is dented and now has space for the mouse or rat to squeeze under and in.
